when you graduate from the university of british columbia you’ll have a degree, friends, stories and some pretty spectacular experiences. you’ll also have a bucket of skills – many of which are professional ones.
below, as identified by the american management association, are five skills that hiring managers look for in new employees. in order to put them in context, i will use the job of circus clown to show their timeless application.
here they are:
effective communication - delivers comprehensive water-spraying instructions to five-person team with no verbal cues, just first-class miming techniques.
critical thinking and analysis – based on research and analysis of previous five (unsuccessful) attempts by colleagues, removed head from lion’s mouth in timely fashion.
teamwork and collaboration – collaborated with 89-person team to seamlessly enter and exit a three-cubic-metre car in under seven minutes.
innovation and creativity – continually include fire and roller skates into components of show, such as when engaging with young audience members during the trampolines and shark tank performance.
john’s bonus skills: adaptability (new employee) and leadership (experienced employee) – demonstrated flexibility by securing myself in a cannon, resulting in a post-explosion-travel of approximately 96 metres (new); or, demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of safety procedures – such as location of 13 different fire extinguishers, medical personal and digital camera – during the rookie-clown-cannon-experience component of circus’s closing ceremonies (experienced)。
for the record, i used the circus clown example instead of doctor, lawyer, teacher, lab technician, financial analyst, economist, historian, web developer, nurse, engineer, researcher or social media guru so that you – our students and readers – couldn’t just copy the examples for each competency. we’re all about learning and personal development.
take some time and think about your examples of these skills. how have you applied them at school, at work, during your travels and when you volunteer- are you applying for an entry level or more senior position with an organization- once you have brainstormed a list of examples, try presenting them as accomplishment statements. and be ready to talk about how you communicate, analyze, innovate, adapt, lead and collaborate when asked about it during an interview.
as a wrap-up, these skills are nothing without professionalism. simply put, being professional means dressing, talking and behaving like the best people who work where you want to work. investment bankers, nurses, programmers and community engagement coordinators are all very different kinds of professionals, but the good ones all show up on time prepared for the task, respect all of their clients and co-workers, always follow-through on promises, accept critical feedback, and go above and beyond when it comes to service.
so there it is. get to know yourself and your skills. and be professional while you do it!
